Body Recovered After Man Goes Missing From Cruise Ship in North Sea
Coastguard aircraft from Prestwick and Carlisle joined lifeboats from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry and nearby vessels in the search.
A body was recovered from the North Sea after a man was reported missing from Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambition on Friday, August 21, 2026. Formal identification remained pending, but the man’s family had been informed.
The search began while the ship was about 36 nautical miles from Arbroath and returning to Dundee from a 14-day solar eclipse cruise. The emergency response delayed the ship’s turnaround.
Aircraft, lifeboats and coastguard teams join search
The man was reported missing aboard the ship at about 8:35 a.m. “Around 8.55am on Friday, 21 August, 2026, we received a report that a man had gone overboard from a cruise ship in the North Sea,” a Police Scotland spokesperson said. The agency confirmed that police and partner organizations conducted the search and recovered a body.
The response included HM Coastguard aircraft from Prestwick and Carlisle, a commercial search-and-rescue helicopter and nearby vessels. Lifeboats from Anstruther and Broughty Ferry participated alongside Coastguard Rescue Teams from Dundee, Arbroath and St Andrews.
Ambition’s crew also searched the ship after it berthed in Dundee but did not find the missing guest.
“Ambassador follows stringent search and rescue protocols in line with international maritime safety standards,” the cruise line said during the operation. Ambassador also said it was working with the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, HM Coastguard and Police Scotland.
The voyage had departed Dundee on August 8 and included calls in the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Scotland, as well as viewing of the August 12 solar eclipse. Ambition’s final call before returning to Dundee was Lerwick on August 19.
Dundee turnaround resumes after delay
Passengers were initially required to remain aboard while the crew completed its search. After disembarkation began at approximately 11:30 a.m., the line continued preparations for the next sailing and instructed arriving passengers to follow their original terminal arrival schedules despite the delayed embarkation.
Ambition departed Dundee on Friday evening for a one-night repositioning voyage to Newcastle upon Tyne, where it was due by 8 a.m. on August 22. The ship is scheduled to operate five cruises of five to 13 days from Newcastle before relocating to Bristol on September 22 and London-Tilbury in November.
Police had not released the man’s identity or further details about the circumstances of the incident. The investigation remained outstanding.
