AmaWaterways Christens New Ship AmaSofia at ASTA River Cruise Expo

AmaWaterways is betting on travel advisors as river cruising heats up, using a ship debut to deepen trade ties just as competitors race to add capacity across Europe.

AmaWaterways christened its newest river ship, AmaSofia, on March 14 in Amsterdam during the ASTA River Cruise Expo. More than 1,200 travel advisors attending the conference were invited to the celebration, which unfolded across three AmaWaterways ships on the Rhine: AmaPrima, AmaVenita, and AmaSofia.

Christening ceremony spotlights travel advisors

AmaWaterways positioned the launch as an advisor-centered event, reflecting the company’s close relationship with the trade and giving attendees a front-row look at the line’s newest vessel and near-term operating plans.

Sarah Little, senior vice president of business development at the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA), was named godmother of AmaSofia. “It is a tremendous honor to serve as godmother of AmaSofia,” Little said, adding, “My very first river cruise was with AmaWaterways, which makes this moment especially meaningful.”

Little also underscored the setting and audience at the Expo: “Christening AmaSofia here at the ASTA River Cruise Expo, surrounded by the advisor community that supports and shapes our industry every day, makes it even more special.”

AmaWaterways CEO Catherine Powell used the ceremony to emphasize the roles of crew, guests, and travel advisors in a ship’s success. “Ships come to life through people, from the crew who pour pride into every detail, the guests who celebrate life’s moments on board to the travel advisors who inspire those journeys in the first place,” Powell said.

Ship capacity and onboard highlights

AmaSofia is designed to carry up to 154 guests across 76 staterooms, with suite accommodations up to 350 square feet. AmaWaterways highlighted a mix of familiar fleet elements and ship-specific finishes, with key features including:

  • Twin balcony stateroom design, combining an outdoor balcony with an indoor-style balcony setup.
  • The Chef’s Table specialty dining concept.
  • A range of stateroom categories, including suites up to 350 square feet.

Rhine sailings now, then a June 7 move to the Danube

After the christening, AmaSofia entered service on the Rhine, with sailings scheduled into spring, including Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps in April and May. AmaWaterways has also described the ship as beginning its 2026 Rhine itineraries with that route.

The ship is then scheduled to reposition to the Danube, with its inaugural Danube departure set for June 7. AmaSofia’s Danube season is expected to focus primarily on sailings between Budapest and Vilshofen, with itineraries including:

  • Romantic Danube
  • Melodies of the Danube
  • Christmas Markets on the Danube

FAM sailings and ship access built into the rollout

AmaWaterways tied ship access directly to the Expo schedule, with a familiarization (FAM) cruise planned as a follow-on program. More than 100 travel advisors are scheduled to sail on AmaSofia as part of that post-conference effort.

Beyond the Expo-linked sailing, AmaWaterways has said it is offering over a hundred FAM sailings on AmaSofia this season, giving advisors additional chances to experience the vessel firsthand while it rotates between major European rivers.

A wider expansion push across river cruising

AmaSofia’s debut comes as operators add new ships, itineraries, and partnerships across Europe. The Global River Cruise Market Report forecasts the river cruise industry will reach $10 billion in annual sales by 2030, up from an estimated $5.4 billion in 2024.

Among the ship and product developments highlighted across the sector:

  • Uniworld plans to debut S.S. Emilie, its first new build in years, with art-inspired interiors and extended-suite options.
  • Tauck is launching MS Lumiere and another unnamed ship, with an emphasis on gourmet experiences and vineyard tours in France.
  • Viking Cruises is adding six Longships, expanding options on rivers including the Rhine, Main, Danube, and Seine.
  • Newer entries include National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions, which is launching its first European river cruise with a sustainability-focused ship design and onboard insights from National Geographic experts, and Trafalgar, which is stepping into the sector with its own approach to routes and ship concepts.

Operators are also leaning into itinerary differentiation. Riverside Luxury Cruises’ nine-day Destination Danube journey is designed to coincide with Hungary’s National Day celebrations, including fireworks displays, cultural parades, and local culinary offerings. Emerald Cruises is introducing Emerald Astra with ESPA amenities and new guest services such as fleet-first onboard laundry, while Kensington Tours is pairing Douro River sailings with land-based cultural exploration in Portugal.

Smithsonian Journeys partnership adds an educational component

AmaWaterways has also pointed to select departures in partnership with Smithsonian Journeys, bringing geography and history experts onboard certain sailings to add destination and regional-history context. With Rhine sailings set for spring and a June 7 transition to the Danube, AmaSofia is slated for a first year that combines guest departures with multiple advisor-focused familiarization opportunities tied to its rollout.
